Please find following a letter received December 23, 2009, from Human Resources for our Members...
The outbreak of H1N1 flu virus continues to concern CUPE members. Employers are legally responsible for protecting their workers from all work related hazards, including exposure to infectious diseases. Here is some information to help answer some of your questions and address some of your concerns. What is H1N1 (Swine Flu)? H1N1 is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. It was first detected in people in the United States in April 2009. It has spread from person-to-person worldwide, in the same way that a seasonal flu virus is spread. How does H1N1 spread? Flu viruses are spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people who have influenza. Sometimes, a person can be come infected by touching a surface or object with the flu virus on it, and then touching their mouth or nose. Is it serious? What happens when people get infected? Most people have recovered without requiring medical attention. However, illness with H1N1 has ranged from slight to serious. Certain people are more at risk than others - including people 65 and older, children younger than 5, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions. Please visit the following websites for more information http://cupe.ca/health-and-safety/Pandemic_Influenza and for background on health care associated infections highlighting the importance of cleaning, laundry and other support services in infection prevention and control visit http://cupe.ca/health-care/health-care-associated-infections Also, refer to Article 12.10, Medical Care and Emergency Leave in our Collective Agreement or copy the link below into your browser for the Employment Standards Act information on Personal/Sick Leave. http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/es/pubs/guide/emergency.ph There is a general duty for an employer to establish written measures and procedures for the health and safety of workers, in consultation with the Joint Health & Safety committee, or health and safety representative, if any. Such measures and procedures may include, but are not limited to, the following - Safe work practices; safe working conditions; proper hygiene practices and the use of hygiene facilities and the control of infections. ATTENTION
DO NOT GO INTO ANY SCREEN ON THE
COMPUTER THAT IS PRECEDED BY THE CONFIDENTIALITY SCREEN, UNLESS YOU HAVE
AUTHORIZATION. BY AUTHORIZATION, WE
MEAN YOU, AS AN EMPLOYEE, HAVE AN ACTIVE ROLE IN THAT PATIENT’S CARE.
DO NOT LOOK UP FRIENDS, NEIGHBOURS,
FAMILY, CO-WORKERS, MANAGERS, SUPERVISORS, HUMAN RESOURCES PERSONNEL, OR YOUR
OWN MEDICAL INFORMATION.
IF YOU DO SO, AND IT COMES TO THE ATTENTION OF THE HOSPITAL, YOUR
EMPLOYMENT WILL BE TERMINATED! ___________________________________________________ CUPE PAY EQUITY Dear Sisters & Brothers: The Union and the Hospital are at a stalemate in the process. The reason is that we are running out of J.I.Q.'s from the membership. We have 49 outstanding classifications still to be evaluated by the committee. This is a long process to begin with, even if everything was in. We will post the 49 classifications still to be done. If you can step up and volunteer to do your classification, please contact Bill Ferguson at 905-385-4555. We will book you off on Union time to come to the office and finish it. THIS IS THE FINAL NOTICE TO THE MEMBERSHIP. If there is no response by January 31, 2009, then the Union will have to complete the J.I.Q. for that classification. So please, phone in ASAP! --- Thanks, Bill Ferguson CUPE Local 4800 and Hamilton Health Sciences continue to meet on a regular basis to oversee the implementation of a CUPE developed Job Evaluation Plan and are pleased to report the following progress: - To provide an opportunity for CUPE members and Management to attend a CUPE Pay Equity information sessions as outlined below. - The purpose of these sessions is to update members on the Pay Equity Process and Job Evaluation Plan. In addition, members will be informed about their role in the process and educated on completing the job evaluation form. - Staff will be required to make arrangements with their manager or immediate supervisor to take the required time off to attend one of the 90-minute sessions. Attention EA's working at the General site:
On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, the Hospital
met with the Union to advise us they were
changing five vacant Full Time Environmental Aide positions of 22.50 hours per
week. The Hospital is now making these five 7.50 hours per week and five 15 hour
per week positions.
The Union immediately filed a grievance on
this.
The weekend of November 14, 2009, rumours were
circulating that the Union was aware of these changes, but doing nothing about
it—THIS IS GROSSLY
INCORRECT!!
This Union is taking every step possible to
protect our Member’s rights.
In
future, please contact the Union office if you need information or have
questions...DON’T LISTEN TO RUMOURS!!
Yours in solidarity,
Dave Murphy
